ASSESSMENT OF DETERMINANTS INFLUENCING STUDENTS POOR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN SHORTHAND COURSE IN COLLEGES OF EDUCATION IN DELTA STATE

Abstract

The study assessed the determinants influencing students’ poor academic performance of shorthand course in colleges of education in Delta State. Two research questions were raised to guide the study and two null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance for the study. The population of the study was 109 year III students from the four government owned colleges of education in Delta State. There was no sampling as the entire population was used. The descriptive survey research design was used for this study. The instrument used was validated by three experts. Chronbach Alpha method was used to compute reliability of the instrument which yielded a correlation coefficient of 0.81. Questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation. The t-test was used to test the hypotheses. From the results of the analysis, it was discovered that the determinants that influence students’ poor academic performance of shorthand course in colleges of education in Delta State are students’ interest and parental factors. The students did not differ significantly in their rating on the determinants influencing students’ poor academic performance of shorthand course in colleges of education based on gender. Consequently, it was recommended that Ministry of Education harmonizes the entry point for the shorthand courses and also ensures that institutions offering shorthand have adequate facilities. Furthermore, schools should re-orientate parents on the importance of creating favourable socio-psychological atmosphere at home for the children by providing them with educative materials.

PERCEIVED WORK SKILLS NEEDED BY FINAL YEAR STUDENTS OF VOCATIONAL TECHNICAL EDUCATION (BUSINESS) STUDENTS FOR JOB CREATION FOR GLOBAL WORK COMPETITIVENESS IN DELTA STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract

This study was conducted to ascertain the perceived work skills needed by final year students of vocational technical education (Business) students for job creation for global work competitiveness in Delta State, Nigeria. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study having a population of 59 vocational technical education final year students (business education option) in college of education (technical), Asaba. No sampling was done as a result of the limited size of the population which was manageable. Two research questions guided the study. A 26-item questionnaire designed by the researchers and titled “Perceived Work Skills for Job Creation for global work competitiveness (PWSJCGWC Questionnaire)” was used for data collection from the respondents. The WSJCQ was subjected to face and content validity and validated by experts in school of secondary education (Business) in Federal College of Education (Technical), Asaba. The instrument used for data collection was a structured questionnaire made up of 26 items, validated by two experts. The researcher administered (59) copies of questionnaire and 52 copies were retrieved after completion by the respondents and this was used for data analysis. The instrument’s reliability was ascertained through Cronbach’s Alpha method and a reliability coefficient of 0.87 was obtained. Mean and standard deviation were used to analyze the research questions. The results of the study revealed among others that vocational technical education (Business) students need entrepreneurship /employability skills for job creation. Thus, it was recommended among others students should improve and update their knowledge and skills in line with the global work expectations and Government should provide adequate training facilities in Colleges of Education in Delta State for effective training of vocational Technical Education (Business) students so as to become job creator sand successful entrepreneurs upon graduation in the global economy.
