TEACHING OF PRACTICAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN BUSINESS EDUCATION
ABSTRACT
This study examined teaching of practical entrepreneurship in Business Education: a panacea for new
skills and business development in Anambra State. Two research questions were formed to guide the
study. The population of the study comprised of eighty-three business educators (83) from Nwafor
Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe (NOCEN) and Federal College of Education Technical, Umunze
(FCETU). No sampling technique was employed because the population was small. This study used a
descriptive survey design. A self-structured questionnaire was the instrument used to gather all the
needed information. The instrument was subjected to face and content validity. A test retest method of
validation was done and reliability coefficient of 0.92 was obtained. After administration of the
instrument on the respondents, only 59 were retrieved and analysed using mean rating and standard
deviation. The data presentation was done in order of research questions. The findings were that
teaching practical entrepreneurship to a high extent leads to skill development and job creation by
exposing and empowering the students with diverse experiences that could help them to start new
businesses in the future. Also, so many factors such as cost and time involved in teaching practical
entrepreneurship as well as inadequate technology and facility needed for the practical to a very high
extent hinder teaching of practical entrepreneurship in Business Education. On the basis of the
findings, it was concluded that the current hardship in the country can only improve when many
students, youths and not just business education students are exposed to different skills via practical
entrepreneurship in and out of school. Hence, the researcher recommends that teaching of practical
entrepreneurship should be improved by providing needed equipment and modern office technologies
for diverse skills development. Also, lecturers should ensure that they utilize the time allocated for
practical in the courses taught to the students well instead of just teaching the students only the theory
parts.
